How to Choose an HVAC Contractor in New Braunfels: The License & Insurance Checklist

Choosing an HVAC contractor is really a verification exercise: confirming that the company touching your home's most expensive appliance is licensed, insured, and accountable before they're standing in your hallway. In a market growing as fast as New Braunfels and the surrounding Comal and Guadalupe County corridor, plenty of outfits are competing for your call — some excellent, some one bad install away from a name change. This checklist sorts them quickly, and none of it requires taking anyone's word for anything.

What should you verify before anyone comes out?

A state contractor license. Texas requires HVAC contractors to be licensed through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), and every legitimate company will publish its license number. Worked example: ours is TACLB118167E — you can look any Texas license up on the TDLR website in under a minute to confirm it's current, see the license class, and check for disciplinary history. No number on the website, the truck, or the contract? Move on. This single check filters out more bad actors than everything else combined.

Insurance. General liability coverage protects your home if something goes wrong; workers' compensation protects you from liability if a technician is hurt on your property. Ask for proof — professionals expect the question and have certificates ready. An uninsured contractor's discount can cost you a homeowner's claim.

A real local footprint. A physical local address and history in the community mean someone will still answer the phone in year five of your warranty. Storm-chaser economics work the other way.

What separates a professional quote from a guess?

For replacements: a load calculation (Manual J), not "same tonnage as the old one" — sizing by habit is how oversized, short-cycling systems get installed. A written, itemized quote with equipment model numbers you can look up yourself. Warranty terms — parts and labor, which are very different commitments — in writing before you sign (know the difference: Team HomeFront Pro vs. the standard manufacturer warranty). And permits pulled for your jurisdiction, never "we can skip the paperwork to save you money." Permits exist so an independent inspector verifies the work; skipping them saves the contractor time and costs you the protection.

What are the red flags?

• Cash-only pricing, or a "discount" contingent on skipping the permit

• A replacement quote diagnosed over the phone, sight unseen — no one can size a system without seeing the house

• High-pressure, today-only pricing — a legitimate quote survives a night's sleep, and a contractor confident in their number doesn't need an expiring one

• No license number anywhere, or one that doesn't check out on TDLR

• A quote dramatically below every other bid — in this trade, the too-good number usually has the corners already cut into it: no permit, no load calculation, or equipment substituted after signing

How do credentials beyond the license help?

Manufacturer vetting is a useful independent signal because it's audited and revocable: factory-authorized programs hold dealers to training and installation standards year after year — we cover what that means in practice in Carrier vs. builder-grade equipment. Company character counts too, because the checklist can't capture how a crew treats your home; the veteran difference in heating and cooling explains the standards we brought home to this business: upfront written pricing, punctuality, and recommendations based on facts rather than pressure.

Put the checklist to work

Verify our license on TDLR right now — TACLB118167E — then test the rest in person: schedule HVAC repair in New Braunfels or any service visit and hold us to every line above. Already holding another company's replacement quote? Our free second opinion is the fastest way to find out whether it's fair — and if it is, we'll tell you so.

Very happy with the work and professionalism that HomeFront provided.
They were very quick to respond to my initial request, within the same day. Made an appointment for the following day, with a very flexible schedule. Their pricing was very fair for the quality of work.

I’m only allowed to give 5 stars. I would give 100 if I could. Home Front. From start to finish did a remarkable job. Quality service with quality products. As a veteran and Home Front having veterans on staff. They all were very respectful. If you need any HVAC work done I highly recommend these professionals.

I had LG mini splits that were failing after just 12 years in service. I knew that I wanted Mitsubishi but also wanted ideas about a better approach. Just as we were getting bids to replace the multi system, it failed and we were left with only one unit in the main living area.
