SEER2 — Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2 — is the federal efficiency rating printed on every new air conditioner and heat pump sold today. It measures how much cooling a system delivers per unit of electricity consumed over a simulated cooling season: cooling output divided by energy input. Higher SEER2, less electricity for the same cooling. That's the whole idea — but what it means for the actual dollars on your New Braunfels Utilities or CPS Energy bill takes a little unpacking.
What changed from SEER to SEER2?
In January 2023, the U.S. Department of Energy replaced the old SEER test with SEER2, which uses higher external static pressure in the test procedure to mimic the resistance of real ductwork instead of laboratory-perfect conditions. Same equipment, more honest number — which is why SEER2 figures read slightly lower than the old SEER figures for identical machines (a 16 SEER unit tests around 15.2 SEER2). The DOE also sets regional minimums: Texas sits in the Southern region, where new central air conditioners under 45,000 BTU/h must meet at least 14.3 SEER2. Anything you buy today is dramatically more efficient than what builders were installing fifteen years ago.
How does SEER2 show up on your bill?
Your utility charges you per kilowatt-hour, and in a Central Texas summer, cooling is usually the largest single slice of household electricity use. A higher-SEER2 system simply consumes fewer kilowatt-hours to hold the same thermostat setting — the savings are the gap between the old rating and the new one, multiplied by how hard your system runs. That multiplication is why the rating matters more here than almost anywhere: our cooling season stretches roughly eight months, from the first warm spells of March to the last 90-degree days of October. An efficiency difference that's trivial in a short-summer climate compounds across thousands of runtime hours in Comal County. • You plan to stay in the home — the longer you own it, the more of the premium the monthly savings return
• You're already replacing — the incremental cost of a higher tier at install time is far less than regretting the choice for fifteen years
Where do SEER2 promises fall apart?
The rating assumes correct installation — it's measured on a test bench, not in your attic. An oversized unit short-cycles and never reaches its rated steady-state efficiency. Leaky ducts dump your paid-for cooling into a 130°F attic. A refrigerant charge that's off by even a modest margin erases the efficiency premium you paid for.
