The Pre-Summer AC Checklist You Can Do Yourself

Pre-summer AC prep is the set of simple checks a homeowner can safely do before the cooling season leans on the system hard. It doesn't replace a professional tune-up — refrigerant, electrical, and coil work stay with certified techs — but it catches the cheap, common problems while the weather is still forgiving. In Central Texas, "pre-summer" means March or April: by the first week of sustained triple digits, every HVAC company's schedule is full of emergencies, and prevention season is over.

What can you safely do yourself?

Replace the air filter — the highest-value 90 seconds in home comfort. A clogged filter causes weak airflow, higher bills, and even frozen evaporator coils. After a Central Texas cedar and oak pollen season, assume the filter is worse than it looks.

Clear the outdoor condenser — trim vegetation and clear leaves, grass clippings, and winter debris to keep roughly two feet of open airflow on all sides. Under live oaks and cedars, spring buildup is real, and a smothered condenser works harder for less cooling.

Rinse the condenser fins gently — garden hose, light pressure, top down, power off at the disconnect first. Never a pressure washer, which flattens the thin aluminum fins and permanently reduces airflow.

Flush the condensate drain line — pour a cup of distilled vinegar into the drain access near the indoor unit. Algae clogs thrive in our humidity and are a leading cause of water damage, ceiling stains, and float-switch shutdowns in August.

Check the thermostat — fresh batteries if applicable, and confirm the cooling schedule survived the winter. A schedule still set for December wastes money silently.

Run a test cycle on the first warm day — listen for grinding, rattling, or buzzing at the outdoor unit and confirm genuinely cold supply air within a few minutes. Finding a problem in April is an appointment; finding it in July is a queue.

What should you leave alone?

Anything behind a panel. Refrigerant handling requires EPA Section 608 certification by federal law. Capacitors hold a lethal charge even with the power off. "Tightening" electrical connections without torque specs starts fires, and bending coil fins with improvised tools does permanent damage. The checklist above is genuinely safe; the insides of the equipment are not. If something in the visible checks looks wrong — oil stains on the refrigerant lines, insulation stripped off the copper, a condenser that rocks on its pad — note it and mention it to your tech rather than investigating further.

What does the professional tune-up add?

The wear items that actually cause July breakdowns live where homeowners shouldn't go: coil cleaning for proper heat transfer, refrigerant level and leak checks, electrical inspection of capacitors and contactors (the number-one summer failure we replace), motor lubrication, blower inspection, and thermostat calibration. Our guide to how often you should service your AC in Texas explains why twice a year is the standard in this climate. Book AC maintenance in New Braunfels before the spring rush, or join the Team HomeFront Club and stop managing the calendar entirely — bi-annual visits, VIP priority service, no service fees, and 15% off repairs from $15.75/month or $189/year.

What if the checklist turns up bad news?

Weak cooling from a system past its tenth Texas summer isn't always worth another repair bill. Before you sink money into an aging unit, spend five minutes with the $5000 rule — a simple math check that tells you whether repair or replacement is the better value — and if the answer points to replacement, get it quoted in the calm of spring rather than the panic of a July failure. Straight answers, zero pressure: that's how Team HomeFront operates.

Very happy with the work and professionalism that HomeFront provided.
They were very quick to respond to my initial request, within the same day. Made an appointment for the following day, with a very flexible schedule. Their pricing was very fair for the quality of work.

I had LG mini splits that were failing after just 12 years in service. I knew that I wanted Mitsubishi but also wanted ideas about a better approach. Just as we were getting bids to replace the multi system, it failed and we were left with only one unit in the main living area.
